PAGE 50:

Let’s just genuinely have some fun and play since it’s New Years Eve

-This time we have the vocalist representatives for the bands, Plastic Tree, Mucc, and Antic Café, who will be consisting the second half of the “Over the Edge ‘07” that will be happening on New Years Eve at Shibuya C.C. Lemon Hall. After this issue comes out, there won’t even be 10 days left before the performance, right.

Tatsurou: That’s true-. Hey hey, on that day, is this live the only one you have? (he looks over at Miku and asks the question)

Miku: Oh, yes. This is the only live.

Tatsurou: which means, we can be there from the head to the butt right. Then on that day, I’ll go there starting from the head, so let’s go together.

Miku: Eh? What does “from the head” mean?

Tatsurou: Oh you know, there’s the first group and stuff? So I was thinking of going to watch that.

Miku: Ah-. Then, let’s go together. Please, please.

Tatsurou: On that day, there’ll be one backstage room where anyone can be in, so why don’t we all do Mon-Han there with everyone?

Miku: oh that sounds nice (laugh)

Ryutaro: Oh I see. That’s what you guys were talking about earlier during the photo shoot, right.

-Um, what is Mon-han…

Ryutaro: Seems like it’s a game.

Tatsurou: Monster Hunter (laugh)

-Oh PSP (laugh)

Tatsurou: Yeah, yeah.

Ryutaro: What should I do…I can’t fit in to that (bitter smile).

Tatsurou: it’s ok, it’s ok. It’s not like we’re only going to be doing games anyway. It seems like there’s going to be a big supply of alcohol in that backstage too, so I think we can all go wild and have fun together.

-So which means, on that day there will be people who will go on stage in a “prepared” condition, right?

Tatsurou: That’s something possible (laugh). Well, it’s the end of the year, so it’s a free and easy kind of thing. So anyway on that day, I will just go from the morning, and as an item I’ll bring a box of mandarins to the hall.

Ryutaro: Wow-. Really!? (laugh)

Miku: Ah, so we’ll drink while eating mandarins as the side dish?

Tatsurou: Those things are completely possible. So-, you guys individually bring something too. It can be anything, even just one bottle.

Miku: Got it. Hm- Then I will bring mochi (laugh)

Tatsurou: Oh, that’s nice! Mochi. That’s the best! (laugh)

-What are you going to do, Ryutaro kun?

Ryutaro: Eh. Then I’ll bring a kotatsu (this is a Japanese style table with a blanket over it, that keeps your feet warm)

Tatsurou: but you know what, there will already be a kotatsu prepared for us there.

-A Kotatsu backstage. Wow, that’s so at-home (laugh)

Ryutaro: I see-. Well then, I wonder what’s good. Hm~…

-What about something to cook the mochi, Miku-kun is going to bring.

Tatsurou: No. We’ll get that prepared already, so. Hey-. (He looks over at the Manager-shi and calls to him) Miku says that he’s going to bring mochi for us on the 31st, so get a toaster or something like that ready!

Manager-shi: Roger. There’s a Mucc toaster, so I’ll take that with me.

-Man, don’t hold a meeting here about mochi (laugh).

Tatsurou: No, these things you need to decide quickly. Miku, you know. Make sure you count the number of bands coming and bring the mochi.

Miku: Which means, that’s a pretty large amount (laugh).

-How many bands are performing that day again

Tatsurou: The ones that are announced are 11, but there might be 12? Because there might be guests that’ll appear right that day or right before.

Miku: I’ll do my best (laugh).

-And, what will Ryutaro kun do?

Ryutaro: Hm-. It’s the end of the year, right. Which means…something that fits that is soba or something?

Tatsurou: Soba! Toshikoshi soba!! (Soba is buckwheat noodles. Toshikoshi is “passing the year” and It’s supposed to help you live longer)

Ryutaro: oh. But, I think soba is hard to bring (bitter smile).

-Why don’t you just go for it, and carry in some Donbei type of things (Donbei is a series of cup noodles made by Nissin)

Ryutaro: Oh yeah. If I have that, then I think I can take it. I wonder how many I should to take…

-…so, we all of sudden got so involved in the topic of what to bring to the backstage room, but I think I’ll take us back to the main topic for a quick moment right now. So from where and how did this time’s event even come out in the first place?

Miku: I had heard that this was Tatsurou san’s idea.

Tatsurou: Well, I guess it became kind of like that. Up until now Mucc had always been doing lives at Mito for New Years Eve. And it was always only us friends who got together and we went wild and it was a lot of fun. But then you know, LA VIE EN ROSE broke up too. So then, we started to talk, saying it’d be weird to still do a live at Mito, so it all started there. It’s boring to just sit at home doing nothing on New Years Eve, so we were talking to the people around us, asking if we could make some kind of event in Tokyo where we can all have fun with everyone. And then this kind of event came into action.

-So that’s what it was

Tatsurou: So, in a way we are considering this event to be something completely different from the so-called usual event. We should just completely take out the pumped up feelings like how many fans came, or what happened to the performance and things like that. Since it’s New Years Eve we should just genuinely have fun and play around with everyone. We party backstage, and then once your turn comes up, you can be like “Well then, we’ll be back soon” “hey, can you really play being that drunk?” it’ll kind of be like that. Then we could even have band men who aren’t even planned to perform, just sit inside the kotatsu backstage and drink together (laugh). We want to make it that kind of loose event.

-So the image is basically kind of like a big New Years Eve & New Years Party.

Tatsurou: yeah, yeah. I’m sure we’ll have countdowns and stuff too. Well, so we just want to do that kind of loose event with everyone and have fun together. So in that way, it wasn’t like it was really my idea or anything, it’s more like I just planted the seed. I didn’t even name the title “Over the Edge” either.

-Oh really. Well then, how was this decided?

Tatsurou: Maybe it was something where everyone pitched in ideas and in the end the one that was most popular got picked or something. Well I guess the meaning behind it really wrapped up too, since it’s kind of like everyone crossing over the borders~ and stuff.

-After hearing that this event has that kind of meaning, how did Ryutaro kun feel?

Ryutaro: I thought that it was something nice. I think it was the time when we got to do an event with Mucc san at the NHK Hall this year. At first, Miya kun asked me “What are you doing in the end of the year?” And then, when I said “You know- we never have anything for New Years Eve and stuff. In actuality we want to do lives and stuff though” he said “Do you guys want to do an event with us?”, and then I said “ah that’s nice~”, and then Miya kun called Tatsurou kun there, and the two of them were saying to the staff person “Yes. Pura san said they’re coming!” (laugh). And I thought that, that kind of pace was amazing too.

-So it wasn’t a thing where they asked through the company first or anything?

Ryutaro: yeah, yeah. Long time ago we used to have lives all the time on New Years Eve too. Also, even more long time ago when I used to work at a Chiba live house, every year all these bands would group together and they would come in, in the afternoon or in the evening all drunk and have fun. So, I thought that it was really nostalgic. I also thought that I wanted to do something that really felt like the end of the year like this event again. So, I was really happy to be invited to this time’s thing.

Tatsurou: There’s a lot of events everywhere, and there are all kinds of things like being main on magazines and stuff, but this time, the main idea is to have fun with the band members together. So, you can’t have the mind-set like you are just participating in an event that some person planned? (And he looks at Miku)

Miku: Oh, yes I understand.

Tatsurou: So anyway-. What places has AnCafe been doing for lives at the end of the year up until now?

Miku: Like AREA…So, it’s our first time being able to perform in this big of an event. So, when we were invited, we all had this feeling like “It’s here~!”

-Has Mucc and Antic Café performed together before?

Miku: we have, twice.

Tatsurou: I think Oomiya Sonic and Zepp.

-What about with Pura Turi?

Miku: We haven’t. This time is the first. Um-, yoroshiku onegaishimasu for this time. (yoroshiku onegaishimasu is like “let’s work together” but a little more formal. Kind of like saying, thank you for working with us or something….)

Ryutaro: No, no don’t be like that, I’ll say the same thing back.

Tatsurou: You know what? Plastic Tree-san is actually a senpai to us too, so usually they aren’t even a band that Antic Cafe can associate with (laugh).

Ryutaro: Wait, what are you saying (laugh).

Miku: that’s true. Up until now I had always see them on magazine and such.

-------

PAGE 51:

Miku: Oh, but once I actually got to see their live at an event. A couple years ago.

Ryutaro: oh, really?

-What were your impressions then?

Miku: I thought he was a person with a really cute atmosphere. And, I thought that along with their sound, they had this strange transparent feeling.

Ryutaro: Oh my-, what should I do (laugh).

-Well then, what about you, Ryutaro kun, what kind of image did you have of Antic Café or Miku kun up until now?

Ryutaro: It’s actually just like him, I thought that he must be a really cute person. And when I actually got to meet him in person like this, I thought that he really is a cute person.

Tatsurou: but you know, he may look like this, but actually when you let Miku talk, he says some dirty stuff.

-Oh yeah, I remember during photo shoot on your break the 3 of you guys were talking and you guys were all riled up about things that I can’t really write on here. It’s not like I was trying to eavesdrop, but I just happened to listen to it accidentally.

Ryutaro: I thought that the gap where when he starts talking he shows a different side to himself was interesting (laugh).

Tatsurou: But you know what, Miku, in general you are pretty stupid.

-What is that a sudden shocking utterance (laugh).

Tatsurou: Do the fans know that there is that kind of gap to Miku?

Miku: Oh, I think they know that. I pretty much don’t care and normally just say anything on stage, so. I say a lot of dirty jokes too. And I do this thing called Pantsu Illusion too (laugh).

-What? What is that, that silly illusion (laugh)

Miku: umm, well. It’s a crazy act where I wrap my head around with underwear.

Tatsurou: What, you’re doing that kind of thing?

Miku: yes.

Tatsurou: But, that’s not even dirty jokes or anything! That’s just something funny (laugh).

Ryutaro: Ahahaha! (laugh)

Miku: Yeah, but that’s my special skill. I look up to Espaa Itou-san and that’s where I started it. I also used to do other things like “Geki Netsu Takoyaki Niko Niko Gui” (Eating very hot Takoyaki while smiling), but then just the day before yesterday, I got a sign from Espaa Itou-san himself. I was so happy (laugh).

Ryutaro: that must have really made you happy-.

Miku: and it even said “To Miku san,”!!

Tatsurou: You really are just stupid (laugh)

-But, this time we got to take pictures of you three honorable people standing next to one another, but when you really think about it, this grouping is a pretty new feeling.

Miku: I guess it is, really. But I personally think that, that is also something that makes this event really nice too. Usually when you do events, the same type of people get together, but being able to do this with senpais and people who have a different color from the usual bands we work with, it really makes me think how amazing it is. I’m personally excited to see what kind of live it’s going to be with the seats being different from usual too.

-Ah the guest seats. That’s true…it will probably be pretty different. Up until now Pura Turi and Mucc, whether it be direct or indirect, have associated with each other, but when you add Antic Café into that, it really becomes this new, different kind of thing.

Miku: I’m different too (laugh).

Tatsurou: Miku was saying this too, but if we were all clumped up together in the same place, then that’s weird too. I think if we’re going to do it anyway, doing it with all kinds of bands will make it more fun.

Ryutaro: It is and End of the Year event after all. I think it’d be nice if that will make it more fun for the fans there too.

-For Antic Café, what kind of stance are you guys planning for this time’s live?

Miku: We’re thinking of bringing with us the parts that we’re good at, just the way it is. Right now we’re in the middle of a tour, so we’re thinking it’d be nice if we could bring that excitement we feel during the tour right into the live for this event too. I want the good-ness of Antic Café to reach those who see us for the first time too.

-How is it for Pura Turi’s case. Pura Turi seems to be lined up with lives toward the end of this year too, but

Ryutaro: yeah it is. The same is for us, when we are doing lives the whole time, as a band we are in a better condition than the usual, so being able to do this during that kind of timing I think was good. This year we really had a lot of lives towards the end half of the year, so we’d like to completely let out what we carried in from that.

Half of PAGE 51:

-Well then, what about Mucc.[/b]

Tatsurou: This time, I’m gonna go in a relaxed mode. I’ve been talking about all kinds of things just now, but the main goal here is to just have fun. So it’s not something where you aim for perfection or anything. Depending on the situation, it’s ok to have mishaps and troubles. I’m thinking it’d be nice to have a live where in the end, you can include all those troubles and say that you “had fun”.

-Well then, since you guys will step over the usual way of doing things and also the usual songs, you think it’ll become something with a different nature?

Tatsurou: I don’t know. We haven’t decided anything that specific yet, but I think that’ll probably be something inevitable or it’ll just become something different naturally. Kind of like a festival or something. And this doesn’t have to do with the live, but simply for me, it’s been a really long time since I spent the End of the Year and New Years in Tokyo, it’s actually been so long it’s not in memory and it feels like the first time, so I’m excited for that too.

Ryutaro: ah, that would be exciting.

Tatsurou: And once the event is over, if we decide to go out to drink, I wonder what Shinjuku would be like? And stuff like that.

-The end of the performance is around midnight, right. I’m sure it’ll be really busy everywhere all the way until morning. But, I think once the morning comes the city will instantly get pretty quiet. No matter if it’s Kabuki-chou or Center city or anywhere else, I’m sure it’ll be like scattered pieces of grain.

Ryutaro: Yeah, that’s how it really is.

Tatsurou: I want to actually see that kind of atmosphere in real life-.

-Speaking of alcohol, is everyone in Antic Café ok with alcohol?

Miku: Um, no we’re not good. Only our drummer, Teruki can drink.

Tatsurou: No way. It’s because you’re short so you don’t have any space to put alcohol in (laugh).

Miku: Ah-, well we actually are all short and around the same height.

Ryutaro: Oh it’s that kind of problem…

Tatsurou: I mean, you probably only come up to half of me, right?

-That’s not true!

Tatsurou: But, you’re probably only like 110 cm or something right?

-That’s too deformed! (laugh)

Miku: I’m about 163 or something. But, we’re all around the same height, so we don’t usually feel that kind feeling. But today during the photo shoot I did think “what?” for a second (laugh).

-That’s true, you were “standing small” in between Ryutaro kun and Tatsurou kun (laugh),

Miku: I know.

-So then what happens when that kind of Miku-kun happens to forcefully drink some alcohol?

Miku: I get dizzy and fall over (laugh).

-How was Pura Turi again

Ryutaro: The ones that drink at lives are mostly Akira and Bucchi (Sasabuchi). But at fan club trips and stuff, it’s free and easy so there are times where I drink sometimes. At those times, when I do lives, it’s different from the usual so it’s kind of funny (laugh).

Tatsurou: But, when vocalists drink alcohol it’s immediate. Doesn’t your voice not come out?

Ryutaro: Really? I think I’m the opposite and it comes out more. It’s momentary, but I feel like my throat opens up.

-Maybe it makes your blood flow better

Tatsurou: For me, my throat gets dry easily.

Ryutaro: Oh I totally understand. For me, it comes out for a moment but then it dries up after. According to what I heard from a doctor, it’s ok when your throat opens up momentarily, but when you keep singing in that kind of condition, then you put a heavier burden on your throat than usual.

-Well then, for those who like to drink, we want you all to be careful with that kind of thing and go on stage.

Tatsurou: But you know. Even before the alcohol, on that day I’m gonna go there from the morning, right? Then, I have a feeling I’ll have been talking so much, by the time it’s our turn, my throat would be all dry anyway (laugh).

Ryutaro: That’s so true (laugh).

-Who knew there was a pit fall like that (laugh).

Tatsurou: But you know, that can’t be helped. I will still sing even if that happens, so it’s ok.

-About how much time is planned for each band’s waiting time?

Tatsurou: I think for the 1st group it’ll be about 30 minutes each. And, for the 2nd group it’ll be about 45 minutes each. And for this time, we’re planning on doing a “New Years Gift Special Project” for the 2nd group. So I think there will be another “something” other than each band’s live.

-This makes things even more exciting now.

Tatsurou: Well, and then all we need is the guests to actually really come…and stuff.

-Got it. So, since we got to have the representatives for the shining 3 bands group together today, we’d like to have you guys talk about the scene of this year and last year, is that alright.

Tatsurou: Yes, yes. Go ahead.

-Especially since this year the words “Neo Visual kei” and “Visual kei” were used a lot and it was even talked about in the general media and also in the overseas media. How do you all feel about this flow of things?

Tatsurou: Let’s see. Well, as a scene, the fact that things are getting really energetic is a true fact I think. There are all these bands that are working so hard in their own different ways. Although all we do is just take advantage of it.

-Rather than taking advantage of it, you guys are more like in the center of it all and holding it up, right

Tatsurou: Well, but I think it’s a good thing. The fact that we are popular overseas and that the world is focusing on that kind of topic. And then that way people who didn’t really have that much interest in this turns their eyes to us right? So, when they actually do turn to look at us, we would want to be looking cool then. I think if we look good at that moment, then people would come toward us from there.

-Concerning that scene, Antic Café and such has really been causing a new wave these past years as the New Generation Band, but how does Miku-kun and the others handle this?

Miku: We don’t feel like “Wow, we’re creating such waves!”, but the thought of “wanting to be a band that creates a new kind of wave” is present in someone. If we could be seen like that from the people around us, then that would make us really happy.

-The things that Antic Café has thrown into the scene is something very big, I think. It’s a style that goes down the path that the dark and decadent image, that used to be mainstream for a while, could never even imagine. And you swept over the scene with that.

Tatsurou: That’s so true. That part is amazing about Antic Café.

Miku: but we’re starting to not understand it ourselves too. We start thinking, What? Is this going a little too far? And those kinds of senses start to get numbed. But, in the end we like showy things, so we’re coming more and more into this side (laugh).

Tatsurou: But you know what, for Antic Café’s case, it was already way past the flashy point. I mean, when that keyboardist came in, there was no greater shock than that, you know? It was so sensational.

Ryutaro: Yeah. That was crazy (laugh).

Miku: Ahahaha (laugh).

Tatsurou: I mean, you guys totally ignored the visual-kei theory. I thought, this was something amazing.

Ryutaro: Me too. At the company office, Tadashi kun and I were just flipping through the magazines and we were so shocked (laugh).

Tatsurou: I thought, it’s visual-kei, but it’s DJ OZMA?? (laugh).

-Now that must have been the true Visual Shock

Tatsurou: At that time I got the members together too and talked about it. I searched for the picture and “Ok here I go, the one that’s surprised is the loser”. Then, I said “here!” and showed it to them and they were all “Ehh---!” and really surprised (laugh).

-Starting with Miku kun, how are all the members catching these reactions from the people around them? Are you not a little uncomfortable?

Miku: oh. We don’t have that at all. It’s actually the opposite, and we want to make everyone laugh and have everyone surprised. We wanted to do something different from other people, so it was good.

Tatsurou: but, that’s actually kind of hard. I recently realized that fact, because in the end band-men are all people that want to do something different from other humans, right?

-That’s true

Tatsurou: so, when those kinds of people all get together, then within that group of people, some start to become similar to each other. Each one wanted to do something different, but in the end, that route was the same as others. Those kinds of phenomenon sometimes occur.

Ryutaro: I see-. How ironic (bitter smile)

Tatsurou: Even when you think of it that way, this presence of Antic Café is really overwhelming.

-I think it’s not just limited to Antic Café, but Pura Turi and Mucc both individually have an overwhelming and strong presence too.

Tatsurou: Ah-, well that must be so. Because we all each have our own world-.

-For Pura Turi’s case, in this group, you guys come under a different generation compared to that of Mucc or Antic Café, but how do you guys see yourselves in this flow of things?

Ryutaro: U---m…Ah-, I don’t really know (bitter smile). But, we’ve seen all kinds of scenes up until now. Kind of like a Biwa-Houshi (this is someone who plays the Japanese lute) (laugh).

-You guys are familiar with 10 years ago during the Visual-kei bubble period (The period where the bands who were called the Visual Gosanke(Visual Top Three) were there, and the scene as a whole was presenting the activity), right

Ryutaro: But, concerning us, we weren’t really associated with that, and people didn’t associate us with them (laugh) I think we were always doing things our own way.

-Because you guys kept your own pace, the Pura Turi now exists, right

Ryutaro: But, I also do feel that the way the world is these days, is starting to change.

-Well Pura Turi also did go to an overseas tour last year and this year too.

Ryutaro: Yes we did. Because there are things you can see and feel when you go over there too. You see that there are really all kinds of people listening to us, and that there are all kinds of bands like this, and they are all working hard in their own ways. And the fact that there is such a current like this, I think is a really nice thing too.

-Having supporters, followers, and friends is a real beautiful thing

Ryutaro: I really am also a person who likes music a lot and also likes bands a lot too, so as we continued that this whole time, if we gained something like a standing ground for ourselves, then we would like to keep on working hard.

-But, even if it’s obvious within Japan, having Japanese bands being given attention overseas must be something that you couldn’t even imagine 10 years ago

Ryutaro: You know, it makes me think how nice it is to have everyone working hard in their own ways. For example, when I see someone in front of me wearing a T-shirt of Mucc or some other band I’m close with, then I strangely get really conscious about it. I get all excited and say “Ah, it’s Mucc!” and stuff (laugh).

-Same with me, once, when I was going to do an interview for a completely different band, I went to a certain country, and I found a Pura Turi flyer, and without even thinking I took it home as a souvenir (laugh).

Ryutaro: It’s such a strange thing. I mean, this is such a unique culture.
